Dr. Ihab Anwar softens his surgery patients with an old joke: A surgeon operates on a pianists’ hands. The pianist asks the surgeon afterward if he’ll be able to play the piano when it’s over. The surgeon tells him that he will, of course. The patient says, “That’s funny. I couldn’t play before!” The joke has been allaying surgery patients’ nerves for years, and it brings up an interesting link between medicine and music.
Ihab Anwar plays the piano himself in his spare time, and he once read a study about an eye doctor in Honolulu who pushed a piano into a hospital room and played classic piano pieces by Debussy, Chopin, and Beethoven.
